The Ground Water Protection Program is managed by the National Rural Water Association and operated by state rural water associations. The program is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).
The Ground Water Protection Program assists small water systems and rural communities in designing and implementing individual ground water (wellhead) protection plans at the local level. This effort is designed to initiate preventive measures at the local level to prevent contamination , prevent noncompliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, lessen the financial burden on consumers, and prevent degradation of drinking water for future generations.
This technical assistance includes mapping of critical recharge and protection areas for drinking water sources, identification and evaluation of potential contamination threats, design and implementation of water supply protection strategies, and planning for future drinking water supply issues, including contingency plans and identification of alternative water supply sources.
