BISMARCK, N.D. – In recognition of the importance of one of the state’s most vital natural resources, Governor Kelly Armstrong has officially proclaimed July 22, 2025, as Missouri River Day in North Dakota.
The proclamation, issued earlier this month, highlights the Missouri River’s essential role in shaping North Dakota’s economy, environment, recreation, and water supply. As the longest river in North America, the Missouri River provides critical water resources for people, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems throughout the state.
“The Missouri River is woven into the fabric of life in North Dakota,” Reice Haase, Director of the Department of Water Resources said. “It supports everything from drinking water and agriculture to energy and recreation. Missouri River Day is an opportunity to recognize the river’s lasting value and recommit to protecting and managing it wisely for the benefit of current and future generations.”
In honor of Missouri River Day, the DWR encourages North Dakotans to reflect on the importance of this resource and explore the many ways the river enhances quality of life in the state—from boating and fishing to irrigation and water for people and other economic development.
